Prayer of the Heart Cheatsheet
(This is taken from The Way of the Pilgrim which I highly recommend)
- Sit or stand in a dimly lit and quiet place
- Recollect yourself
- With the help of your imagination find the place of the heart and stay there with attention
- Lead the mind from the head into the heart and say, "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me," quietly with the lips or mentally, whichever is more convenient; say the prayer slowly and reverently
- As much as possible guard the attention of your mind and do not allow any thoughts to enter in
- Be patient and peaceful
- Be moderate in food, drink, and sleep
- Learn to love silence
- Read the Scriptures and the writings of the Fathers about prayer
- As much as possible avoid distracting occupations

The Way of the Pilgrim is a great and inspiring book. On my first pass I got three things out of it.
First, I got an understanding that it is possible through the Grace of God to grow my spiritual self into a form more pleasing and closer to God.
Second, reading the passage about how the Pilgrim and his wife used to do “mindless prayers and prostrations” like someone doing somersaults but that those prayers were still beneficial gave me hope that my poor attempts at the rule are not pointless.
Finally, my version has many explanations and related passages from Russian and Desert Fathers. That combined with the Pilgrim’s interpretation of Bible verses in view of effects of the Jesus Prayer lead you to believe that the Apostles themselves had a similar relationship with God. The Jesus Prayer can lead you nearly as close to Christ as those who actually walked with Him spiritually speaking. Reading The Way of the Pilgrim does cast some Bible verses in a new light.
